Marana Arizona– The Blacktop Grill wins the 2024 Local Marana Business of the Year Award.
Gabe Ceniceros sparked the idea of The Blacktop Grill in 2014 when he wanted to be his own boss.
“At the end of the day, I just wanted to be my own boss, and all I really knew was food. I had been in the industry for 25 years.” said Ceniceros.
Before The Blacktop Grill, Ceniceros worked in different facets of the restaurant industry, including fast food, fast casual, and fine dining. With that experience and knowledge, Ceniceros started a ‘small food cart held together by band-aids’ selling Sonoran hot dogs, which later grew into the restaurant he has today.
“In a city full of Sonoran hot dogs that are amazing, I just knew we needed to stand out without knowing that it was the start of something beautiful,” said Ceniceros.

Ceniceros and The Blacktop Grill stood out by having healthier options. An example of a healthier option is the vegan menu offered, which was incorporated by mistake.
“It was just an option that we were adding without knowing the impact it was going to have,” said Ceniceros.
The impact it had was a significant one, especially in this day and age where people are more conscious of their health and what they eat. Some of the healthier options provided are beyond meat and soy chorizo. Despite having a healthier menu compared to other Mexican restaurants, it doesn’t take the fun out of Mexican food.
“Our healthy stuff is fun and I’m proud to say I’m able to serve a different variety of people and their diets,” said Ceniceros.
Seeing how much The Blacktop Grill has grown since 2014 has left Ceniceros grateful to the community as well as excited for what the future has in store for his restaurant.
“It’s very humbling to see how far we’ve come and it’s very exciting to think about where it’s going. I’m truly humbled and grateful to the community because they really opened their arms to us as a small business,” said Ceniceros.
When he’s not focused on The Blacktop Grill, Ceniceros plays music. He has a band called Los Street Lights and he performs acoustically as well. Ceniceros started playing music at 16 years of age and is still active today. He writes his own music which is inspired by reggae and reggae soul.
“It’s kind of my getaway if you will. Some people like to play golf, I like to play music,” said Ceniceros.

When visiting The Blacktop Grill for the first time it may be hard to figure out what you want when you have dishes like hot dogs, tacos, and street corn that have been nominated Tucson’s Best. Just make sure tomorrow embrace the options, even if it means multiple visits.
“We’ve been at it as a small business for 10 years, so everything has been tried, tested, approved, and the beauty about our menu is we continue to improve it. It’s a menu that I stand by and I’m very proud of and continue to put in a lot of work for the betterment of it,” said Ceniceros.
