The Right Flowers for Fall in Marana

Fall is a great time to plant in Marana, Arizona before the winter chill arrives. The cooler temperatures make it ideal for introducing new plants that will thrive through the mild winters and have established root systems when the weather warms back up in spring.

When selecting plants, choose varieties that can withstand light frost or freezes during the winter. Some hardy options that grow well in Marana’s climate include:

  • Alyssum – Dainty annual flowers that come in colors like white, pink, and purple. They have a light, sweet fragrance and can be grown from seed in fall.
  • Calendula – Also known as pot marigolds, these medicinal flowers bloom in yellows and oranges throughout the cool season. Start seeds or transplants in fall.
  • Chrysanthemums – Gorgeous, long-blooming perennial mums thrive when planted in fall. Provide sunlight and well-draining soil.
  • Cyclamen – A perennial winter-bloomer with colorful flowers in white, red, pink, and purple. Set tubers out in fall and enjoy pretty blooms.
  • Dianthus – Features frilly carnation-like blooms on low-growing mats. Plant these perennial flowers in fall for spring blooms.
  • Flowering kale and cabbage – Though edible, these are also planted for their vivid white, pink, and purple foliage. Use as cool-weather bedding plants.
  • Iceland poppies – Blooms in bright colors like yellow, orange, white on fragile-looking plants. Direct sow seeds in protected areas in fall.
  • Pansies – Our cool-season favorite for their cheery faces in a huge range of colors. Plant violas for smaller but similar blooms.
  • Snapdragons – A classic for fall gardens, available in tall or dwarf sizes and many colors. Give them full sun and well-drained soil.
